Flood Alert

Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster

Flooding continues to be possible on 15 December 2025. Persistent rainfall over the last 48 hours has caused river and lake levels to rise. No further significant rainfall is expected on Monday or Tuesday. River levels are now starting to fall and lake levels remain high. Large amounts of flood water remain. Locations most affected will be low lying land and roads near the rivers Brathay, Rothay, Winster and other watercourses from Grasmere to Grange-over-Sands including low lying areas around Ambleside, Skelwith Bridge, Windermere, Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Backbarrow, Cark and Cartmel. We are closely monitoring the situation. Avoid using low lying footpaths, bridges near local watercourses and do not drive through flood water. This message will be updated by 10:00am on 16 December 2025 or as the situation changes.
